Common Dog Tick

Family pets bring great happiness to our lives. However dogs, cats and their owners suffer great discomfort when fleas and ticks enter the picture. So here’s the scoop on managing fleas and ticks.

Both ticks and fleas can be a year-round problem in Oklahoma. Various species of ticks exist here and, as a result, are never all hatching at one time. Fleas persist due to so many pets living indoors, providing an ideal climate for year-round breeding of this insect pest.

With recent breakthroughs in flea and tick control, pets can lead happy pest-free lives.

Flea and tick control can be achieved by using Integrated Pest Management or (IPM) techniques. This means using good sanitation, such as mowing yards and vacuuming homes, to reduce flea and tick populations. It also means understanding the flea life cycle. Although adult fleas make up only 5% of a flea infestation, pesticides have traditionally targeted this part of the life cycle. The remaining 95% consists of eggs, larvae and pupae. Flea offspring must be targeted if they are to be controlled or eliminated.

WHY CONTROL FLEAS AND TICKS?

Fleas are not just a nuisance to us and our pets. They also carry intestinal parasites, such as the dog tapeworm, that can be passed on to the animal. A single flea bite can cause flea- allergy dermatitis on sensitive pets, leading to serious skin infections. Ticks carry many diseases that affect both humans and pets. Heavy populations of these blood sucking pests weaken animals. Older, less vigorous animals suffer more quickly from fleas and ticks.

THINKING LIKE A FLEA

Our worst flea pest is the cat flea ( Ctenocephalides felis ). Fleas need a blood meal to survive. Their favorite hosts around the house and yard are dogs, cats, squirrels and other warm blooded mammals. If people are being bitten by fleas in a house where pets are present then a very high population is present. For every six fleas seen, there are 300 adult fleas actually present. If animals are not present, fleas will opt to hop onto humans. They thrive best in indoor climates.

The presence of adult fleas is just the tip of the iceberg. There are actually many more flea eggs, larvae and pupa just waiting to become adults. Targeting only adult forms of fleas is not at all effective. Long-term, effective flea control is best achieved by use of products that target flea adults and their young.

Fleas can be controlled with a three step program of treating the pet, their sleeping areas and the moist, shady areas outside of our homes.

Common Deer Tick

Residents living in rural areas should check pets daily for tick infestation. Examine the entire animal, especially around the ears and face. Some ticks, such as the Brown Dog tick, can be found in specific areas of the animal. The brown dog tick adult is most often found in the ears and between the toes. After their eggs hatch, larvae and nymphs are found in the long fur at the back of the neck.

Wash pet bedding in hot, soapy water and thoroughly clean areas frequented by pets, vacuuming carpeted areas and mopping hardwood and tile floors. Treat premises with products labeled for indoor use. Newly hatched fleas live most successfully indoors as they prefer areas out of sunlight, temperatures of 70°-90° F. and high humidity.

Flea eggs drop into carpet and hatch into larvae. These larvae live on organic debris that is in carpeting. They also survive between the cracks of hardwood floors and along baseboards. After feeding for several days, they become a pupa, wrapped in a silken cocoon that is pesticide resistant.

Common Wood Tick

Use an outdoor flea and tick control product in problem areas. Note that methoprene breaks down quickly outdoors. Use products containing pyriproxyfen as an outdoor insect development inhibitor.

Tick tock & time running out for California stores selling puppy mill animals

Tick tock … time running out for California stores selling puppy mill animals

One after the other, Los Angeles, Orange County and other California communities are banning the sale of puppy mill animals through retail outlets. First it was South Lake Tahoe, then West Hollywood, followed by Hermosa Beach, Glendale, Irvine, Dana Point, and Chula Vista.

Altogether, 19 communities, large and small, have banned the sale of puppy mill animals, and several have ordinances in motion. The latest is Los Angeles, the second largest city in the country. The initiative to ban puppy mill sales in L.A. has been led by Council Member Paul Koretz. The Los Angeles City Council Personnel and Animal Welfare Committee just approved his motion to draft the ordinance prohibiting the retail sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. Once the full council approves the motion, Council Member Koretz and his advisers will draft the ordinance. That meeting should take place within the next few weeks. We will keep you posted.

There is a monumental shift in thinking taking place in our country around puppy mills and the retail pet stores that sell them. Fellow animal advocates, we are winning this war. Ending the sale of puppy mill animals will be one of the greatest victories of our time.

I agree with this completely. If people wish to breed dogs then they should need a permit to show that they have what it takes to be a good breeder, and otherwise should be fined.

Now if they can just save the dogs still in the puppy mills, that will be great!  CJ

I bought a dog from a backyard breeder in Mississippi when I lived in Memphis.  She was the only famale left, so I took her.  She had an underbite, but she was the sweetest, smartest little Yorkie-Poo you ever saw.  I thought I was going to die when she passed away at the age og 15, but no one lives forever.   CJ

I fully agree, it is past time to stop allowing pet stores to make a profit though the misery of these helpless animals. This policy needs to go nation wide.

i agree that some “back yard breeders” are doing the right thing by their dogs.  i have a puppy mill breeder dog that i have had for just over 3 years, the “breeder” said this dog had NEVER been outside or out of a cage!! she estimated his age at about 11 or 12 yrs, she couldnt remember!! she kept almost 200 “breeders” in 1 bedroom stacked on top of each other, not fed or loved or cared for.  most of these dogs had severe health problems not to mention the social issues they have!!  I have worked very hard to socialize this little man (he is a 6 lb party pomeranian) has VERY bad legs, teeth ( has had 14 teeth removed at the 2 dentals he has had since living with me) the legs cant be fixed due to age/health and arthuritis :(   this so called “Breader” held this case up in the legal system for over 2 years and in the end gave up custody of all dogs and was charged with animal cruilty/neglect on 72ish of these poor animals – my little man being one of them!  I HATE the situation puppymill dogs have to endure and think this needs to stop!!  I am also soooo blessed and happy that i am able to make this one dogs remaining years happy and full of love!!  PLEASE people, lets do what we can to shut down puppymills but also realize that there are some good breaders out there that do care for and love their breading dogs!!

Really… I don’t care about the legal details or what’s fair to breeders or not. The bigger picture is best said in a favorite saying that I believe applies here, “When you know better do better.” All types of adoptable dogs, puppies, purebreds, are waiting for homes in shelters. The coolest people get this, poor, middle-class and even celebraties… Anyone purchasing from a breeder unless for show should be shamed.

How To: Removing A Tick For The First Time

So while sitting down to watch the Jubilee Concert, we discovered CJ had a massive tick on her front leg. We assumed she must have picked it up whilst running around up on The Downs earlier, but after a quick browse on the Internet, it was clear we had to remove it.

Words like “disease”, “infection”, “permanent disability” sent Helen into a mini panic mode and instead of trying to find an emergency vet on a Bank Holiday Tuesday, I proposed we did ourselves.

A quick tutorial on YouTube later and we had CJ in the conservatory ready for the removal. However she was quite awake having been chasing us around The Downs earlier on and was in no mood to lie still.

A dog owner with a Newfoundland who’d we’d met had suggested Piriton (an antihistamine) to make her dozy for when we trim her, so we decided now would be the perfect time to try this theory out. One tablet and 30 minutes later, CJ was quite willing to lie down and let us take a look.

It was quite a big tick and despite several articles saying I shouldn’t use them, I grabbed a pair of tweezers, grabbed around the head, rotated and pulled it. As far as I could see, I got the whole thing, pincers and all and CJ barely even noticed. Two days later and there doesn’t appear to be any residing illness or effects.

Win.
