Non-toxic flea and tick solutions for your dogs and pets

It’s always Flea Season, but before the most active seasons arrive, for the sake of our pets, we must be ready.

It’s much less difficult to keep fleas away than to deal with an infestation, so spare your family and pet a great deal of misery with the right strategy and the right weapons from nature’s arsenal. No one method is totally effective, and there are pros and cons to every product.

You wouldn’t put toxic substances on yourself, don’t put them on your pet.

Use non-toxic natural flea protection solutions. That means no flea powders, sprays, collars, shampoos, and dips that are toxic and harmful to your pet; including the newer products that are given by pill or applied to a spot on the skin.

Despite the manufacturers’ claims of safety, they do not offer natural flea protection, and many problems, some quite serious, have been observed with these products. Many popularly used products contain ingredients such as carbaryl (Sevin), a nerve-paralyzing chemical that can cause a host of side effects, DDVP (dimethyl dichlorovinyl phosphate), methylcarbamate, rotenone, pyrethrins, and piperonyl butoxide. Piperonyl butoxide is used as a booster in most of the new pyrethrum products. It is associated with liver disorders.

DDVP is the chemical found in the majority of plastic flea collars. DDVP numbs an insect’s nervous system and, although your dog cannot speak, the chemical can have the same effect on your pet. Flea products containing d-Limonene or citrus oils are considerably safer than those listed above, but some have significant toxicity potential. Why risk the health of your pet?

Our mission is to create a safe, effective defense with a three-sided approach.

(1) Create a defense against fleas for the pet
(2) Treat the yard to make it inhospitable for fleas
(3) Treat the house to make it inhospitable for fleas

The three-sided approach is necessary for effective prevention from infestation or re-infestation.

Good Natural Nutrition is the Best Defense Against Parasites and Disease

It can not be emphasized strongly enough. The absolute best natural flea protection solution is to reduce your pet’s susceptibility to parasites by improving its health by building a strong, healthy immune system. The healthier your pet is, the less attractive it is to fleas. Parasites and fleas in particular are attracted to weak, unhealthy or young animals whose immune system is not functioning well. Diet plays a vital role.

Raw diets seem to be the most effective. However, at the very least, if you are not already please start feeding a natural food diet without chemical preservatives or colorings or meat by-products. Saying “premium” on the label with a big corporate name means basically nothing. (Click Here) to see what true natural high-quality, commercial food is all about.

A natural diet, either home made or a quality commercial one, along with a quality supplement, is an important weapon for protection against parasites and to promote good health and longevity. If you have not joined the many satisfied pet parents who have tried and are using Dr. Jones’ supplement, we urge you to at least investigate it. It offers exceptional quality at a very good price, and very good service. (Click Here)

Grooming, Washing, Vacuuming

onp-shampooAfter good nutrition, natural flea protection requires grooming and washing as the two best ways of getting rid of fleas and to keep them off your pet. If possible, and if it is not upsetting to your dog, vacuum the fur if your dog allows you. It would also be a good idea to place the cut-off end of a flea collar or moth balls/crystals in your vacuum cleaner bag to kill any vacuumed fleas. Use a natural professional-quality, non-toxic flea repellant shampoo and conditioner. Don’t use a chemical flea shampoo that leaves a petrochemical residue on the dog’s skin that is absorbed through the body, or when the pet licks itself, it gets an oral dose of a toxic chemical. Don’t use human shampoo. Your dog’s skin is a different pH than people’s so human hair products may be drying and irritating.

A natural insect repellent

onp-herbal-defense-sprayYou can add to your defense approach a natural insect repellent spray that contains essential oils to keep away insects. Contains no DEET or other pesticides, safe for dogs and cats, can even be used with puppies and kittens too young for other flea remedies. It uses lemongrass, citronella, neem oil, catnip, and other natural herbal extracts to keep away every variety of annoying insect pests. Most people and pets don’t mind the herbal-citrus scent, but insects definitely do! Spraying your dog and even your pant legs before your daily walk or hike will deter ticks and reduce your risk of picking up disease-carrying parasites. (Click Here)

Rid Fleas and Pests with Borates And Diatomaceous Earth

If you’ve eaten anything made with flour, you’ve eaten DE. NOT the DE sold for pool filters that are chemically treated. DE is used in commercial grain storage as natural, poison-free insect control. Borates and diatomaceous earth can be used almost anywhere around the home, yard or animal housing and are natural, ecologically-sound defenses, safe for people, pets and the environment, against flea termites, carpenter ants, roaches, fleas and a host of other pest infestations. Borates and/or DE can be used for prevention, either before you get a flea problem or immediately after, by sprinkling on the carpet, furniture, etc., as well as be used directly by working it into the pet’s fur. It will dry out and kill flea eggs.
