There are a few issues that Summer seems to bring up in dog lovers. One is helping their dog deal with the sometimes unbearable heat. Fret not, we will be addressing that in an article next, but for now, we wanted to talk about the issue of tick prevention. While the tick problem can become an epidemic if you walk your dogs in heavily wooded areas, there are some simple steps that are healthy and natural, and will benefit your dog when it comes to limiting their exposure to ticks.
First off, despite what many people think, there are all natural flea and tick collars for dogs, not holding any dangerous pesticides within them that could potential harm your dog. And even better, you can make one yourself by rubbing some eucalyptus on rope collar or bandanna and attach to your dog to make a natural tick deterrent that is also 100% organic and non-poisonous. Spread the word and let other dog owners know how easy this is to do.
Another great natural way to deter ticks is apple cider vinegar. Carry some around in a spray bottle, and spray onto your pet before gong for long walks in heavily wooded areas. The ingredients in the vinegar are completely harmless to your dog, but will repel most blood sucking beasts away. And it is a simple enough step than any dog owner can carry a bottle at all times in the car, just in case.
We also donât discourage the new supersonic emitters some people are using to deter tick and fleas. They release a sound that humans and dogs cannot hear or pick up on, yet the song is so strong to ticks, it can makes their tiny heads explode. Ok, so maybe we donât know the actual science involved, but we know they work pretty well and donât harm dog at all, so we support them.
Last, and the best defense is just in Summer time, when there is a lot of outdoor activity, just make sure you check your dogâs coat regularly, because sometimes, nothing can beat just a good old fashioned detection and prevention.
